From a small tea garden house to an international university: Kusum Munda's inspiring story
Born into a simple family in the Karimpur tea plantations of Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar, Kusum Munda is today a unique example of struggle and self-confidence. Having overcome extreme poverty, illness and various limitations, she is currently studying on a full scholarship at the Asian University for Women, an international educational institution in Chittagong.
Kusum recently shared her life's struggles, lessons and dreams in a regular program 'Adwitiyaar Golpo' organized by Prothom Alo Trust. The program was held online and broadcast on Prothom Alo and Prothom Alo Trust's Facebook and YouTube channels.
Kusum said that she had to grow up struggling with poverty since childhood. Both her parents were tea plantation workers. The family's daily income was only 187 taka 43 paisa. Along with running the family on that meager income, continuing her education was also a big challenge.
She started her education at a primary school in a tea garden. Later, she would walk to a distant school every day. Even though her parents gave her 10 taka for tiffin, she would not spend that money and would save it to buy notebooks and pens. Although she could not afford private tuition, Kusum moved forward on her own.
He had a dream of becoming a doctor since childhood. He started studying in the science department with that dream, but due to financial crisis, he did not get coaching or necessary guidelines. Still, he continued his studies by staying up all night in the light of the hurricane.
Before the SSC exams, a difficult time came in her life. She fell seriously ill due to overwork and physical illness. Kusum had to stay bedridden for two long years. Her parents had to sell the last of the family's belongings for treatment. However, despite all this, she did not give up on her studies.
Kusum said, “Even when I was sick, I would lie down and lie down. My mother would take me to the exam center so that I wouldn’t fall on the road.”
Later, she got the opportunity to get admission in Jahangirnagar University but could not get admission there due to financial crisis. Finally, she got admission in Asian University for Women with full scholarship.
Adapting to the international environment and the English language was also a big challenge for him. Although he had difficulty understanding the class lectures at the beginning, he did not give up. He would record the classes and listen to them over and over again and regularly practice speaking English.
Kusum Munda is currently dreaming of becoming a teacher. She believes that people in the tea plantation area are still far behind in terms of education. Therefore, she wants to become a teacher and stand by the talented students of her community.
Kusum said, "I want the light of education to spread in our garden. May those who are afraid to dream like me, find courage."
Kusum Munda's journey of overcoming poverty, illness, and limitations is now a shining example of inspiration for many young people.
